Ground Water Department
ACTIVITIES OF GROUND WATER DEPARTMENT:
The main activities of the Department are:
- Groundwater surveys for selection of suitable sites for construction of different types of wells for agriculture, drinking water, Govt. Departments and other users under TSWALTA.
- Ground levels is being monitored through Piezometer wells, command area and general observation wells to know the changes in water levels and water quality due to applied irrigation.
- This Department is taking up Estimation of Groundwater Resources in the District at periodic intervals for scientific planning, development and management for its sustainability. Groundwater Estimation is a key role in many programmes being taken up by the Government.
- Conducting environmental studies for Sand mining, Granite mining and Industries of Public and private sectors and also carrying out groundwater pollution studies whenever called by the district administration.
- Groundwater investigations in the lands of SC/ST farmers and also construction of exploratory bore wells which were targeted in the annual action plan under Special Component Plan/Tribal Sub Plan.
- Conducting groundwater investigations for selection of sites for construction of Percolation Tanks, Check Dams and Rainwater Harvesting Structures to recharge groundwater.
- Clearance of Infiltration (I.F) wells for Irrigation and drinking water under Lift Irrigation Scheme Programme.
- Clearance of Drinking water schemes of Rural Water Supply, Municipal and Nagara panchayats, whenever they are referred to this Department.
- To carryout Hydrogeological, Geophysical and Hydrological investigations to delineate potential zones of groundwater, including water logging areas and groundwater stressed areas for optimum usage.
- Resuscitation depends on Precipitation, Recharge and Artificial Recharge and mitigate the anticipated severity by careful utilization of Groundwater, and also to take collective measures to enable optimum utilization of monsoon rainfall by way of storing and conserving it on top priority by the line departments.
The Ground Water Department is a multi-disciplinary Department engaged mainly in monitoring of groundwater levels, generation and dissemination of data, periodic estimation of groundwater resources as per GEC methodology, investigations for selection of well sites, artificial recharge structures etc, Groundwater feasibility for Land Purchase Scheme and Giri Vikasam to SC and ST landless families, registration of Rigs & Environmental Clearance studies – Groundwater clearances for Industries, Impact studies of Sand mining on groundwater regime etc.
The Department also carries out groundwater quality monitoring from all principal aquifers during pre-as well as post monsoon season and assess its suitability for drinking and irrigation purposes.
GROUNDWATER LEVELS:
The Groundwater department is monitoring the groundwater levels every month through established piezometers under National Hydrology Project (NHP).
